and it will co-operate closely with the to help ensure that all projects related to the World Cup, including a new international airport, 12 stadiums and a metro network, are all completed on time. The consultants will stay on until 2024, in order to ensure that all work is successfully completed.
In terms of the management contract, CH2M Hill will be coordinating with a number of government agencies to ensure that the construction work is carried out on time. Three existing stadiums will also be upgraded.
The value of the contract has not been made public at this stage, but the organising committee has announced it would spend a total of $4bn on the event.
Several other international firms had been in the running for the contract, including Turner International, UK construction consulting company Arup and Mace, the company that built the Shard skyscraper in London. Because Mace had worked closely with Qataris on the Shard building, the company was actually favourite to win the contract.
CH2M Hill currently has 30,000 employees around the world, its Middle Eastern staff currently numbers 2,000, of which 200 are at present working in Qatar. The company has a number of divisions, including transportation, energy, facility development/construction, environment, water and resource management.
Services performed by CH2M Hill range from engineering to master planning, construction, programme management, maintenance and operations and design/build. It is worth noting, for example, that the Qatar Public Works Authority has recently appointed the company to manage a sewerage project designed to overhaul Doha’s wastewater services over a seven-year period, at a cost of between $2.7 and $3.3bn.
Another remarkable CH2M Hill initiative, established last year, was the signing of an official co-operation deal with the School of Public Affairs and Administration University of Kansas. The aim of this partnership is to firmly establish the school as a major centre of discussion and research in the field of city management, both within the USA and internationally.
A joint venture with the government of Singapore involves assisting in the replacement the country’s entire sanitary services infrastructure. The Singapore Deep Tunnel system will improve the existing infrastructure, both in terms of ease, reliability and economy of operation.
Another major recent CH2M Hill project was a joint venture with General Electric to construct a $660 million gas-fired power plant in Australia.
